Frequently Asked Solar Questions
What is the Federal Solar Tax Credit?
The Federal Solar Tax Credit (also called the Investment Tax Credit or ITC) lets you claim 30% of the total cost of your solar system as a credit on your federal taxes.
For example, if your system costs $25,000, you can deduct $7,500 from what you owe the IRS.
When does this credit expire?
The 30% credit is currently set to end on December 31, 2025.
After that, it is expected to decrease significantly or phase out, depending on federal policy.
Is there a cap on how much I can claim?
No cap. You can claim 30% of your total installed system cost, no matter how big the project is.
What does “placed in service” mean?
To qualify for the credit in a given tax year, your system must be:
✅ Fully installed
✅ Inspected and approved by your local jurisdiction
✅ Granted Permission to Operate (PTO) by your utility company
PTO is the official sign-off that your solar system is active and generating power.
If my system is installed in December but PTO happens in January, what happens?
If PTO is issued in January, you must claim the credit on your 2026 tax return, not 2025.
How long does PTO take?
Yes, many states and local jurisdictions offer rebates and incentives—SolarTech will help you discover what you’re eligible for.
What if I don’t owe enough tax this year to use the full credit?
No problem—you can roll over unused credit to future years until it’s fully claimed.
Do I get the tax credit as a refund check?
The credit is applied to reduce the amount of federal income tax you owe. It is not a cash rebate or check from the IRS.
How do I claim it?
You’ll file IRS Form 5695 with your tax return. We’ll provide all the documentation you need to make it simple.
Can SolarTech guarantee my system will be installed and approved before the deadline?
We guarantee the installation timelines we commit to in your contract. However, final PTO depends on your utility’s processing times. The sooner you start, the better your chances of securing the 30% credit this year.
Are there any state incentives or rebates I can combine with the federal credit?
Yes—California offers property tax exemptions and potential rebates for battery storage and energy efficiency upgrades.
Tip: The federal credit reduces your out-of-pocket cost first, then state incentives may apply. Ask our team to show you all available options during your consultation.
What if I finance my system—can I still get the tax credit?
Yes. Even if you finance with a loan, you still qualify for the 30% credit based on the total system cost.
Leases and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), however, typically do not qualify—you must own the system.
How does the tax credit work with battery storage?
If you install a battery charged by solar, it is also eligible for the 30% tax credit. Standalone batteries that are not charged by solar do not qualify.
Will going solar increase my property taxes?
No. Under California law, solar installations are exempt from property tax reassessment. This means your property taxes will not go up when you add solar.
How much can I really save over time?
Most homeowners save $50,000–$100,000 over 25 years in avoided electricity costs. We’ll provide a custom savings estimate during your free consultation.
